Visitors listening on headphones at the We Been Here exhibition

Commissioned sensory experience, Rome, Georgia

We Been Here

Context
A group exhibition of paintings and sculpture in a busy gallery.
Challenge
Help visitors slow down and engage with the art more deeply, instead of moving quickly from piece to piece.
What we designed
A headphone listening experience. Visitors chose one piece, re-read the artist's description and stayed with it for a full song (three to four minutes), noticing brushstrokes, textures and faces, and whether the music changed the story. The instruction was simple: notice and allow.
What it showed
A small, structured change in what people hear and how long they are invited to stay can lengthen attention in a crowded, stimulating space. The same principle sits at the heart of the Attention Reset.

Research foundations

The thinking behind the work

Sonari's thesis, that attention shapes behavior, draws on established ideas from psychology about attention, environment and story.

Flow

Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Flow Theory

Deep, absorbed attention happens when an experience holds us fully. Sonari designs sessions that make it easier to reach that state, and teaches people how to protect it at work.

Environment

James Gibson, Ecological Perception Theory

What we perceive depends on the space around us. That's why Sonari treats sound, light and setting as part of attention, not background.

Story

Richard Gerrig, Narrative Transportation Theory

When people become absorbed in a story, their attitudes and intentions can shift with it. Sonari's keynotes and workshops use story and live experience so ideas are felt, not just heard.
